Volusia County Hikes

Hi Folks.
Here are the upcoming events for October & November. I hope you see something that tickles your fancy and entices you to come out into the woods.

Night Hike
Longleaf Pine Preserve-East Entrance
Pioneer Trail, New Smyrna
Saturday, October 11
6:30-8:30 pm

Experience the natural world after the sun goes down. Dale Samler, DBC Biology Instructor, will lead us on a night hike to look and listen for critter activity by the light of the moon. The hike will take us through several habitats. Wear hiking or walking shoes that can get wet. Bring insect repellant and water to drink.

Space is limited, please register.

Hickory Bluff Preserve Guided Hike
End of Guise Rd., off Maytown Rd., Osteen
Thursday, October 23
9:00-11:00

Take a guided hike and see a mosaic of Florida natural communities and see a beautiful natural part of the St. Johns River.

Star Tour of the Night Sky
Wiregrass Prairie Preserve
Lopez Rd., off Pell Rd., off Maytown Rd, Osteen
Friday, October 24
6:30-8:30 pm

Dr. Hugh Ward, Astronomy teacher at Seabreeze High School, will lead a celestial tour of the night sky above Wiregrass Prairie Preserve and answer questions. Adults and families will observe via eyes and telescopes: constellations, bright stars, planets, star clusters, and Messier objects and learn to move from one celestial object to another. No charge.

Bring: Folding chair, insect spray, flashlight and your own telescope, if you have one.
Arrive before sunset. Road conditions are rough.
Please register.

Capture Nature Through Painting
Green Springs Park
994 Lakeshore Dr., Enterprise
Saturday, November 15
9:00-12:00

How many colors do you see in the spring?
Experience natural Florida through the perspective of plein air painters-painters who paint outside. Sandra Wilson, artist and founder of the DeBary Art League and Gateway Center for the Arts, will lead a "paint out" along the scenic shore of Green Spring in Enterprise for her art students and public participants of all ages.

After learning the basics of color and paint from Sandra, participants will try their hand at creating their own paintings. No artistic talent necessary, just a sense of creative adventure! Materials provided. Bring folding chair. Free to adults and families.

Guided Hike of Lyonia Preserve
Wednesday, November 19
9:00-11:00

Take a guided hike of Lyonia Preserve and experience what makes Florida scrub so special-and meet the Florida scrub jay. Since the Deltona Library parking lot is closed due to the expansion construction, we'll meet in the Deltona City Hall parking lot on Providence Blvd. and walk together across the road to the Lyonia service gate to enter to Preserve.

Bike-the-Woods Ride-About
Longleaf Pine Preserve
November 22, 2008
9:00-12:00

Enjoy a bike ride through Longleaf Pine Preserve with a few stops to explore. We'll set off for a 6-mile bike ride through Longleaf Pine Preserve and if participants want to go farther we will. The trail will be on mostly hard packed road with occasion muddy areas. Off road tires are a necessity.
Wear comfortable clothes that match the weather and bring water and snack.

Let me know if you'd like to join us.
